2015 Caribbean Classic Coaching Staff


Coach Ferro returns for his eleventh season as the head coach of the Butte College Roadrunners Baseball Team. Coach Ferro's first 10 years at the helm have proved extremely successful, as Ferro's teams have compiled a winning record of 219-177-1. Under Coach Ferro's eleven years of leadership, the Roadrunner's have accumulated eight 20+ win seasons including coming one win away from tying the school record for wins in a single season in 2011 with 29. A native of Woodland, California, Ferro received his Bachelor's degree in Physical Education in 1997 from Cal State University, Chico, and a Master's degree in teaching pedagogy in the year 2000. Anthony and his wife, Sarah, have two children: eight-year-old, Grace, and four-year- old, Audrey. The Ferro family resides in Chico, California.
As a result of Ferro's attitude toward excellence, nearly every sophomore has graduated and moved on to a Four-Year University to not only continue education, but to continue their dreams of playing baseball at the next level. In Ferro's ten years on the job, he has placed a total of 67 players at Four-Year institutions. Ferro has boasted eight Division-I players, including 2011 Ace Pitcher Tanner McIntyre & 2013 LHP JD Doran who signed with Virginia Tech, thirty Division II players, and twenty-one more who have gone on to play at NAIA Universities. In addition, five ex-Roadrunners have had the opportunity to play in the College World Series. 2012 graduate Tyler Molder (York College), 2011 graduate Alec Abend (York College) & 2007 graduate Chris Cooper (Azusa Pacific) all played in the NAIA World Series. 2005 graduate, Josh Tavelli (UC Irvine) made it to the Division I College World Series, and Jacinto Rivera, (California State University, Los Angeles) also a 2005 graduate played in the Division II College World Series. Lastly, three Roadrunner Alumni have signed professional contracts. Most recently Michael Gleason (RHP) was drafted in the 34th, Alberto Rolon (RHP), a member of the 2009 Frontier League playing independent professional baseball.

Mario “Mo” Vela, ATC begins his 3rd year as a Coach for the Caribbean Classic and his 6th year as President/Founder of NorCal Mavericks Athletic Development in Chico, CA. A native of northern California, Vela is a junior college product from Napa Valley College who received a baseball scholarship to University of the Pacific, where he earned his Bachelor’s degree. After earning his degree from UOP, Coach Mo transferred to Fresno State University as a graduate assistant in Athletic Training working with the football and baseball programs, respectively. During his time at FSU, Vela had the opportunity to work and study pitching under the expertise of College Hall of Fame Baseball Coach, Bob Bennett. After earning his Master’s degree, Vela became the Sports Medicine Coordinator and Athletic Trainer at Butte College in Oroville, CA, a position he has held for the past 13 years.
Mo Vela’s success as a coach is a result of his own experience on the field as a player and coach, extensive training under Bob Bennett, expertise in biomechanics and injury prevention through sports medicine, and his educational background in talent development. Vela has worked with athletes from every level of competition from youth to professional, and has coached athletes through the Division I level. He founded NorCal Mavericks to focus on instilling life skills and values in young athletes through baseball, thus enhancing life opportunities though sport.
Mo currently resides in Chico, CA with his two sons, Brendon, 15 and Dustin, 11.

Russell Jacob JR, born January 2, 1975 Lives in Winter Haven, Florida. Began baseball career with Seattle Mariners from 1993 – 1997, as starter, bullpen pitcher. During his time with Seattle, Russell was selected to several Instructional leagues; Named Top Prospect in the Mid West League and Selected to Hawaii Winter League. While playing in Hawaii Russell was named to the ALL STAR Team and Player Representative. In 1998 Russell was selected in the Rule 5 draft by the Arizona Diamondbacks and was named best fastball in the California League and also selected to play in the Arizona Fall League. He had season ending elbow sugary in 1999. Finish his playing career with the Boston RedSox in 2001. Still having the passion for the game Russell pursued coaching opportunities with Americas Baseball Camps, IBC (Summer Showcase Team for College and Pro Prospects), Polk State College with Joe Arnold. Pitching Coach for Utica Brewers of the NYCBL in 2011, (summer collegiate baseball league), Pitching staff posted a 2.36 ERA. best in the league with the league leading record of 41-14 and NABF World Series Champions.

 Ken Willis
James "Ken" Willis playing experience consist of playing divison I baseabll at Florida A&M and Savannah State University where he played as catcher and finished with batting average of a .314 his senior season.
His coaching career consisted of being a student assistant coach at Florida A&M University (2004) and a volunteer interim head coach at Savannah State University(Fall 2005). In 2010 he became the head coach of baseball at Sebastian River High School in Sebastian, FL. Where Coach Willis is still devoting his time diligently working and giving back today's youth.

- 3 time “Manager of the Year” honors
- Held “Back 2 Basics” summer baseball clinics for 7+ years
- Managed / coached various age groups in both league and post season tournaments
- 2009 Junior All-Stars Western Regional Semi-Finalist - Aliso Viejo, CA (17-2 record)
- 2013 District 14 Big League All-Stars Western Regional Runner-Up - Bremerton, WA
- 2013 Big League team was one win away from qualifying for the World Series tournament in Easly, SC but was defeated in the finals by a very strong Southern California team
- Coached several players that went on to play high school, college, and a few blessed pros
Coached with travel ball teams: Fremont Reds, Dirty Sox, Stormz, and Fremont Fury
Enjoyed a brief J.C. baseball career at Chabot College under Coach Don Christianson ‘81

Originally from Kingston, Jamaica - Coach Wayne resides in Newark, CA with his wife, Lidia. They are the proud parents of 3 cats – Pilot, Shadow, and Sunny along with their beloved English Bully – Delilah!
